Veneers are very thin, tooth colored shells that are cemented to the front of teeth to mask multiple dental problems … uneven or crooked dentition; unwanted gaps between teeth; misshapen or chipped teeth; or deeply stained enamel … are just a few of the dental maladies that can be treated with dental veneers.
Cosmetic dentistry is available for patients that wish to undergo a smile makeover. Veneers are just one of the many options available; the process requires several dental visits and the results are permanent.
The patient will consult with their dentist to discuss the number of teeth to correct. Your dentist may incorporate photographs, dental x-rays, or dental impressions throughout the veneer process.
Some things to know about porcelain veneers include:
Porcelain is stain resistant … newly placed veneers are made to match surrounding teeth. Porcelain will not respond to teeth whitening, so if whitening is desired, that process should be undertaken first so veneers can be made to match newly lightened natural teeth that are not treated with veneers.
Treated teeth receive an added layer of strength, but veneers do not mean teeth are invincible; habits like nail biting or patients that experience teeth grinding have to be mindful that they can still do damage to teeth treated with veneers. Patients known to grind their teeth will likely be advised to wear a night guard to protect teeth.
Your smile makeover can be achieved in a few dental visits over a couple of weeks. Other corrective measures can take much longer to achieve results.
The porcelain veneer process does require a small amount of dental enamel to be removed from teeth to be treated … when enamel is removed, it cannot be replaced making veneers permanent and non-reversible.
Your dentist will have the dental lab fabricate veneers to match surrounding untreated teeth for size, shape, and shade. This is why some enamel must be removed – veneers are very thin, and once cemented in place they will fit in naturally with neighboring teeth.
Caring for veneers does not require anything special. Daily brushing and flossing and twice yearly visits to the dentist for cleaning and exam should keep all your teeth functioning properly and looking great for a lifetime of smiles.
