Having spaces between teeth is a relatively common, yet often unsightly issue for many people. Many of these spaces occur naturally, and are simply attributed to the way in which the adult teeth have grown into the mouth; other spaces can occur as a consequence of teeth being damaged. Whatever the cause of the spaces, dental veneers can help to close the gaps between teeth and so deliver a more attractive smile.
Veneers belong to the field of dentistry called cosmetic dentistry. They are used by a cosmetic dentist to alter the shape and appearance of a person’s smile, and can be used to treat a range of issues. They are typically made of porcelain, although composite veneers are also available. The dentist shapes the affected teeth by carefully removing a small amount of tooth enamel from the teeth to be treated, and then takes impressions of the patient’s smile that are sent to a dental lab in order for the veneers to be created.
Once the veneers have been returned, the dentist bonds them on top of the existing tooth, to alter the appearance, size and shape of the smile. Veneers can even be shaded and shaped in order to better blend with the patient’s existing teeth, helping to provide a more natural finish to the smile.
Porcelain used in the treatment is semi-translucent; this allows for light to shine through the veneers and is reflected back from the tooth’s enamel, further helping to enhance the illusion of a natural smile.
Once the dentist has placed the veneers over the patient’s teeth, the natural tooth and porcelain work together to provide strength and durability; the natural tooth provides additional strength to the veneers, while the veneers provide a more aesthetically pleasing look.
Veneers can also be used in other treatments, such as correcting the appearance of misshapen or misaligned teeth, or teeth that have excessive staining, or staining that can’t be corrected through teeth whitening. For filling spaces between teeth, however, veneers are often the obvious choice.
