Zoom Whitening is a professional cosmetic dentistry treatment that uses a concentrated 25% hydrogen peroxide gel to remove surface stains from teeth. The gel is applied to teeth followed by exposure to UV light to activate the whitening process. The whitening gel is then removed and replaced with a fresh application of the gel. This is done for three sessions in one visit, usually lasting about 15 minutes per session. Lips and gums are protected during the whitening procedure, as well as protection for eyes to avoid risk from UV light exposure.
Unlike at-home treatments for whitening teeth, Zoom Whitening is a professional treatment that can only be done by a qualified cosmetic dentistry team. Many patients use at-home whitening kits that also contain hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient but these kits and at-home treatments cannot provide the same professional results. These at-home treatments can, however, create increased sensitivity in teeth, leaving many patients to assume all whitening treatments make teeth sensitive. The sensitivity can be from weakening of the enamel, depending on the type of at-home whitening used.
During the UV light exposure, some patients experience a sensation that could be described as an occasional zap, though this should not be confused with the zap one feels from static electricity. Most patients tolerate the three 15-minute UV light whitening sessions well, but some can manage two sessions then experience discomfort during the third. The dentist and clinic staff want patients to be comfortable and satisfied with results, instructing patients to let them know if there is any sensitivity or discomfort during the Zoom Whitening process.
After Zoom Whitening, most patients have no sensitivity in the teeth, or if there is residual sensitivity, it is temporary. The temporary sensitivity typically subsides within a day.
